Almost a thousand years of tradition
With almost 1,000 years of wine-related family history, the Attems winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia is an exception. Despite the long tradition, the wines are convincing above all with their light-footed freshness and a young and modern attitude.
The origin of the wine tradition in the house of the Counts of Attems dates back to 1106 when Konrad de Attems received the land as a gift from the Bishop of Salzburg. Already at that time wine growing was practiced here. The commercial production of wine in the countryside near Gorizia did not begin until 1935, when Douglas Attems inherited the business, creating a new understanding of quality and opening up the market.
Ideal conditions for domestic and international vines
The Attems vineyards are located less than 15 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea and thus receive just the right amount of dry summer warmth, which of course is particularly beneficial to the white vines. The combination of the proximity of the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, the coast and the hinterland, the Mediterranean aridity and European moderation made the winegrowers of the region understand hundreds of years ago that these are ideal conditions for international vines, which are then cultivated very successfully.
The Attems Cicinis
Douglas Attems recognized that plenty of sunshine and an ideal microclimate with an optimal temperature change were the best basis for standing out from the competition. With the Attems Cicinis, the estate also quickly created its own small white wine niche. Cicinis is the name of a single vineyard in the Collio, an extremely rich sub-region of Friuli. The Cicinis itself is a crisp cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc, which seduces with strong herbs, white flowers and extremely aromatic fruits. With this small noble white wine, a wonderful business card for the Collio was created.
Going new ways into the future
Count Douglas stayed in the daily business until 1999 and let the following generation take an important step into the future: Since the year 2000 the Blue Bloods have been working together with the winery Marchesi de' Frescobaldi - one of the biggest Italian wine producers.
The Attems winery stands for wine enjoyment without the frills. Even if you are more of a white wine connoisseur, because this region does it best: Red wine, like the Attems Merlot, will let your palate go on a new voyage of discovery. Nevertheless, nothing beats the lively joie de vivre of white wines. No easy decision thus.
