Bodega de Moya
Bodega de Moya had always been the dream of a passionate and successful Belgian businessman. One day it was finally time: Yves Laurijssens decided to leave his Belgian factories behind and dedicate his life to his obsession with wine.
That moment changed the life of his entire family. They left for Spain and combed the whole country to find a suitable location for the winery. They were finally successful in Valencia. The grapes grown there were mostly of the Bobal variety from which mass wines were produced, but Laurijssens believed that they had the potential to produce great wines. That was exciting – it was a new challenge. In cooperation with the vintner Vicente Ramon Torres, the De Moya winery was founded. Its vineyards, with 60 to 90 year-old vines, are located in the tiny village of Casas de Moya on the hills behind Valencia at an altitude of 800 to 950 meters. The Belgian-Spanish duo thus became pioneers of the Bobal renaissance.
On their own 40 ha vineyards, the grapevines grow in low-nutrient, sandy, loamy soil which is interspersed with gravel and leads to a reduced yield of high quality grapes. Following a selective manual harvest, the wine is mash-fermented in temperature controlled concrete tanks and carefully matured in large and small wooden casks. The red wines carry the names of the women in the family: SofiaMaria and Justina are named after his daughters, and one of the white wines bears the name of his son Diego.
The Bobal Grape
The Bobal is an important varietal that is gaining more and more international attention. In the Utiel-Requena region near to Valencia, it has been the main grape variety for hundreds of years.
Bobal grapes are compact and mid-sized and are extremely resistant to drought. It is also known for its ability to retain its acidity better than any other variety grown in hot climates.
Top quality Bobal wines demand controlled yield in the vineyard, ideally harvested from old vines that exhibit a proven natural production cycle.
High altitude Bobal vineyards at over 700 m above sea level are able to produce some very remarkable, high quality wines with a well-structured, fresh and velvety taste.
