An adventurously barren area
Already in the distance you can discover the magic-bizarre rock formations on the horizon. Caves, gorges, crystal-clear streams and snow-capped peaks can be found about 200 kilometres northeast of Cape Town. The Nieuwoudt family settled in this breathtaking landscape in the middle of the 19th century. The vineyards of Cederberg are located at an altitude of 950 to 1100 metres. These are among the highest in South Africa.
In 1893 the Nieuwoudt family moved to the Dwarsrivier farm, also known as the Cederberg private cellar and holiday resort of Sanddrif.
Nobody expected it
Nobody from the Nieuwoudt family expected that six generations later the Cederberg vineyard would become a high altitude, award-winning wine farm in the Cape wine country. The winery is located in the Cederberg Wilderness Area, 66 hectares of which are under wine.
Today Cederberg is managed by David Nieuwoudt, the fifth generation of the family. The sixth generation with daughter Emma is already waiting. In the wine cellar David is supported by the winegrowers Alex Nel (responsible for white wine) and Tammy-Turck-Nel (responsible for red wine).
Cederberg Private Cellar's Wines
The focus is on the Private Cellar's wine line. Cederberg has 66 hectares of vineyards at its disposal, which are planted with red and white wine in a 50:50 ratio. The following grape varieties are cultivated by Cederberg:
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Chenin Blanc
- bouquet grape
- Chardonnay (for sparkling wines)
- Viognier (as blend component)
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot (for the Merlot Shiraz Cuvée)
The terrain is rough and the grapes are small but have a high concentration of aromas. The vines grow on a variety of soils - from sandstone and decomposed gravel to red slate and clay. Thanks to the harsh winters and the isolated location, the wines are protected from infestation and disease.
