Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most famous wineries in the world and has been in the Rothschild family for a very long time. In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased the winery, which was then owned by his daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, from 1988 until her death in 2014. In the meanwhile her children, Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, are now members of the Primum Familiae Vini, which is an international association of family-owned wineries that place special emphasis on traditional winemaking.
Château Mouton-Rothschild also attracts many tourists who can learn about the winemaking process up close in its museum and cellars.
82 Hectare Vineyards for the Finest Wines
Finest wines from all over the world are stored in the personal cellars of the Rothschild family. The winery is also known for the artistic labels that decorate each vintage.
The winery is situated in Pauillac on the Médoc peninsula, between two bodies of water – the Girondac to the east, and the Atlantic to the west. Its proximity to the river balances temperature fluctuations in the soil, and the wines on the peninsula also profit from the mild Mediterranean climate. The gravelly soil on Médoc is low in nutrients and is unsuitable for growing anything but grapes. The results are elegant, bold, and tannin-rich wines.
