De Wetshof Estate
De Wetshof Estate – Wines from the Chardonnay Wizard
The De Wetshof winery is located in the Wine Valley in South Africa. It is considered one of the most famous Chardonnay producers in the world. Since the 1970s, the winery has been operated by Danie de Wet. That was when he brought – despite the import ban and quarantine restrictions – Chardonnay vines to South Africa and laid the cornerstone for the vanguard position as producer of exquisite Chardonnay white wines he holds today. The Robertson Wine Valley has a dry climate. A light breeze blows from the coast of Agulhas toward the vineyards which serves to cool them down in the sunny summers. At the same time, the cooling winds and dryness reduce the risk of pests in the vineyards, which makes it possible to keep the use of pesticides to a minimum.
The soil of the De Wetshof vineyards are characterised by a high chalk content and the optimal pH levels that go along with that. Each of the vineyards has unique soil characteristics which, in turn, influence the individual wines. While the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay take root in rocky soil, have impressive mineral aromas and citrus notes, the vines that grow closer to the River Breede develop a fuller, more compact flavour thanks to the predominantly high loam content in the soil. It is precisely this reflection of the terroirs that winemakers from all over the world strive for. De Wetshof has accomplished this with excellence and elegance.
