The wine of the Popes: Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bernard Friedmann originally comes from the wine trade and has only been a winegrower for six years. As a wine connoisseur and gourmet he fulfilled his dream of owning his own winery with Porte Rouge. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the best and most renowned terroir of the southern Rhône, he bought vineyards. In this place, with the best sites for Grenache, he was able to acquire six vineyards with old vines, which was the best way to realise his vision.
The Domaine Porte Rouge is located in the centre of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The buildings were used by a silk factory until 1907, when a cooperage moved in. At that time the current cellar was also carved into the rock. The name Porte Rouge (= red door) is not derived from the actual red cellar door, but from the Provencal word "Orouse" for wind. Indeed, the Mistral often blows or storms through the vineyards on the Rhône. As a result, the vines dry off quickly after rainfall and are therefore well protected from fungal diseases and do not have to be protected from fungal diseases in any other way.
