    Rafael Palacios

Rafael Palacios started his wine project in 2004 in the Bibei Valley in the municipality of O Bolo, 50 km north of the Portuguese border in the DO Valdeorras. He bought old vineyards of the local white Godello variety from older winegrowers who could no longer manage the arduous cultivation. The extremely impassable landscape and the low yields of the not very fertile soils, together with the phylloxera and economic depression of the 1920s, led to the almost complete abandonment of this small but historic wine region of Valdeorras.

These small plots of land were mainly terraced and were raffled off by the region's winegrowers through the "Sorteo" lottery. In the westernmost part of the region, at the foot of the Massif Central of Ourense, granite is the predominant rock. The vines mostly grow on sandy soils, which are the result of the natural extraction of this granite rock and the presence of quartz slate. Currently, Rafael Palacios owns 28 plots of land with a total area of 24.5 hectares. He exclusively produces the Godello variety, which enjoys a continental climate with Atlantic influences.

The vineyards of Bodegas Palacios are located on the right bank of the river Bibei at an altitude of between 620 and 740 metres. These plots are cultivated in the traditional way and with ecological means. The older areas and vines are biodynamically cultivated. Rafael Palacios is personally responsible for the viticulture and the ageing in the cellar. His aim is to respect the identity of O Bolo and express the purity of its wines.
