Viña Los Vascos - Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)
In honour of the Basques
Los Vascos is a Chilean winery owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1988. Los Vascos means "The Basques". The Rotschild family did not immediately decide on this estate, but researched the potential of the local wines, tasting many wines and visiting the terroirs with their characteristics.
The choice for Los Vascos
Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) chose the Vina Los Vascos winery in Chile because of its location close to the sea, its exceptional soil, its ideal weather conditions (intense sunshine - low risk of frost) and sufficient water sources.
Very substantial investments were made under the supervision of the technical director of Château Lafite Rothschild. Among other things
- Restructuring of the winery
- replanting programme
- Deliberate reduction of yields
- Securing water resources
The Los Vascos winery was gradually expanded and modernised. This is the only way to meet the new requirements for vinification and maturation. The guest house was recently built in the traditional Chilean style to welcome visitors to the Los Vascos estate.
Los Vascos today
All the research, modernisation and investment has paid off. Because Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) had the right intuition that Los Vascos had the potential to produce fine wines. The unique terroir gives the wines their character. The pursuit of excellence also requires passion and time - and this is what Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) likes to do.
