The Moselle traveller finds the winery Walter in Briedel, where Alfred and Alexa Walter have been running the family business since 1983. The roots of the Walters, however, lie much deeper on the Moselle, since traces date back to 1568.
Alfred Müller, master winegrower and wine-growing technician, decisively shaped the winery Walter together with his wife Alexa, a trained landscape gardener, and raised the quality level enormously.
Since 2012 they have had their son Gerrit Walter at their side as support. Gerrit brings everything it takes to make great wines. After various positions in the German wine scene and successful wine growing studies in Geisenheim, he spent 2 years as cellar master at the renowned wine estate Dreissigacker in Bechtheim (Rheinhessen).
Apart from know-how, the winery Walter also depends on the grapes and the vineyards. The Walters can fall back on the best plots in locations such as Marienburg Castle in Pünderich, Weisserberg in Briedel and Schäferlay in Briedel.
Altogether, the Walters have 7 hectares of vineyards, 70% of which are planted with Riesling. Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau and Dornfelder. They are all rooted in the finest grey and blue Devonian slate, which gives the wines a particularly high degree of minerality.
